Following the recent passage of the Omnibus Spending Bill for 2024, officially titled the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 (HR 4366), 10th District Congressional candidate Jay Fratt issued the following statement addressing government spending, with a focus on reform:

Fratt remarked, “Most people are against government waste, corporate pork, and budgetary spending beyond our fiscal means. Unfortunately, it’s become commonplace for omnibus spending bills to be trotted out in the dark of night, without the ability of representatives to read or comprehend the enormity of the costly mistakes and boondoggles contained within. The game of politics has replaced working for the people of the United States.”

He continued, “Our current system of governance is broken by design. Plausible deniability seems built into every step of failure. Even worse, political rhetoric on both sides of the Red vs Blue debacle blame the other side.”

Emphasizing the detrimental impact of government shutdowns as a weapon to highlight failures in spending packages, Fratt further stated, “Principled opponents to omnibus spending have fallen into a trap. Government shutdown has become the chosen weapon for those trying to highlight the egregious failures of omnibus spending packages. That weapon creates headlines, but ends up injuring those wielding the threat.”

Taking a firm stance on the methodology of public spending packages, he declared, “Omnibus spending bills are the antithesis of responsible governance. And they must end.”

Addressing the significance of the Department of Defense, the largest employer in the U.S., Fratt noted, “The Republican Party fails to effectively lobby constituents when their paychecks and livelihoods are threatened.”

Fratt proposed earlier work on spending packages to avoid the deadline-driven debates, stating, “The battle against omnibus spending must take place in the months well in advance of the government shutdown deadline. It needs to be made an issue for every Republican to campaign on so that the deadline itself never becomes a principled offensive path of political destruction.”
